Dear diary… dear blog… how do I start this? It is actually good I decided to give a try to a blog. For a long time it has been catching my attention these kind of blogs but never knew what to write about, and finally found a reason. I am actually on my 4th year of my English Studies degree and one of my professors, the Contemporary Narratives in English professor to be more specific, gave us the opportunity to work on one of our novels of the subject in a different way. To be honest, she gave us the freedom to choose the way on how to work on our portfolio of it, as long as the freedom to choose which of the three novels we wanted to work on. How cool is that? Freedom is all a student wants when facing any kind of project but, is this freedom what we really want? I am not an essay kind of person, however, I am a very talkative one… Noticed already? All of us think that having this freedom will allow us to do a magnific project, choosing how to do it and the topic of it. However, when we are there, in front of the paper or the computer or even in the library looking for… what? There, waiting for our mind to give us a clue of what should we do, about how should we do it. Is this topic good? And this format, will it fit the expectations of my professor for this project? Will it be enough to get a good grade? And then we work to get a 5, because we actually feel lost with what we wanted in the first place: freedom.
During these four years, I have struggled to achieve a decent mark on my literature courses. As you can imagine, they are very demanding as to achieve an academic level. Our professors have been teaching us since our first year and expect good projects and essays that show what we have been taught. With this I do not mean I will work less than when I write an academic essay, but hey, I am sure this will motivate me to actually go into the reading with frequency and try to understand every bit of it. So, going back to the freedom, I think I am sure I have found an interesting way in how to expose my experience and adventure with the novel I have chosen.
To continue with, out of the three novels I have chosen Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson. As we had the list of the novels previously published on our online campus, this novel catched my attention and, as they are contemporary narratives, I thought it would be a very interesting novel, to find out the main issue behind the title Written on the Body. Actually, this is one of my main goals when I am exposed to a reading, as it is very important for me to find the hidden sense, or message, of each of those titles.
Well, this looks like the end of… let’s call it an interesting introduction to a wonderful reading adventure! See you soon!
